TBI MAGELLAN MGD-200 SUBWOOFER AMPLIFIER

The Magellan MGD-200 subwoofer amplifier represents the state of the art in its class for bass musicality. The MGD-200 was developed to power the new class of passive subwoofers utilizing the Embedded Transmission Line (ETL™) to establish true low frequency extension without mass or resonance. As a result the focus for the MGD-200 was to provide low distortion with ample power and control of a non-resonant piston system while providing required integration facilities.

Utilizing high quality parts throughout the MGD-200 provides 200 watts to 4-ohm speaker loads but more amply using cutting edge class D technology to accomplish its power transfer. The extremely low impedance of the amplifier over the low frequency range provides near perfect signal transfer to the non-resonate load. Stable and low impedance assures linearity of the signal transfer to the load through proper cabling.

FRONT PANEL

The attractive front panel is designed to complement your high-end components with it complete control layout. The MGD-200 provides control of the low-frequency crossover while providing a fixed 70 Hz high pass for bass shy satellites. The crossover control has a wide range of adjustment from 30 Hz to 200 Hz allowing bass rich or bass shy satellites to accomplish extension when the Magellan passive subs are utilized. The low pass crossover slope for the MGD-200 is 12db/oct.

To assist the crossover control the MGD-200 includes a volume with a 52db gain range, a phase switch and a subsonic filter especially helpful for turntable owners. This useful addition provides near flat response to 25 Hz with a deep attenuation at 10 Hz to avoid rumble or low frequency noise in some CD recordings. The MGD-200 features an exceptionally broad crossover range adjustment allowing for integration with many types of satellites.

There is a power on-off button with a auto switch allowing for continuous operation or for the amplifier to enter into a standby mode. This action is indicated by the dual color LED with red for standby and green for active operation. Power is maintained to all linear circuitry during standby mode.

REAR PANEL

The amplifier connects to an audio preamplifier or surround line level output using gold plated RCA jacks conveniently located on the rear panel. Additional adjacent jacks allow for you to continue feeding this signal to other line level processing equipment eliminating the need for Y-type signal splitters in some cases.

The rear panel also includes speaker level inputs and outputs to allow for insertion into any type of audiophile music system. There are 5-way binding posts that allow for you to connect your amplifiers speaker outputs directly to the MGD-20 speaker inputs. This transfers the signal into the high level sampling inputs of the MGD-200.This purely resistive 200Ω input does not load your amplifier and will be a parallel connection with your main speakers if they remain connected directly to your amplifier.

This method of connection will allow use of the high quality passive high pass filter incorporated in the speaker out terminals. This filter is a very simple 6db/oct filter employing a film bypassed high-end bipolar roll-off capacitor. When your main speakers are connected to these terminals there will be a gentle reduction of low frequencies beginning at 70Hz. This benign filter relieves bass shy satellites of congestion caused by feeding them bass frequencies that they don’t handle well while maintaining a pristine phase characteristic. The filter characteristic is based on an 8 ohm load.

The Magellan MGD-200 allows for the connection of two passive Magellan bass extension modules. These outputs are marked Subwoofer Output A and B. The total combined impedance should be maintained at or above 4 ohms for best performance if other types of passive subs are used. The output is 150 W into a single 8Ω load and 200 W total into two 8? loads

The MGD-200 operates on 120v or 240v when used with the proper adapter. This selection is not automatic however and care must be taken to assure that the proper voltage is selected prior to connecting to an AC supply. The red voltage selector switch is conveniently located next to the AC input. An adapter for the local supply will be necessary when using the supplied IEC cord. The main fuse is located in the power receptacle housing as marked.
